The Bow Street Runners (Victorian police)
The Bow Street Runners were a British police force operating in London in the nineteenth century.
In The Murderess and the Hangman, the characters Detective Inspector Gil Sequin and his deputy Nimrod Jones are Bow Street Runners.
Sequin is methodical and determined - in the tradition of Sherlock Holmes, but less hassled by moral scruples. His assistant Jones is a drunken joker, a kind of playboy version of Dr. Watson.
The Bow Street Runners patrolled the highways and streets within the parish of
Bow Street, especially around the notorious Covent Garden market - the location in The Murderess and the Hangman where the title characters - Kate Webster and William Marwood - meet for the first time.

The Runners were
actually created by novelist Henry Fielding, then 'Chief Magistrate'
and his brother John who became the next Magistrate. The brothers
served at Bow
Street Court and created the salaried constabulary in 1750.
